Animal Facility

Animal Facility of NIB has facilities for maintenance and breeding of laboratory animals under standard husbandry practices.The animal facility maintains inbred strains of various animal species including mice, guinea pigs and rabbits.The animals are maintained and inbred conventionally.At present more than 370 lab animals are maintained in the facility in different rooms for the purpose of breeding or stock maintenance.

The animal house facility has been registered by CPCSEA and awarded the registration no 824/04/a/CPCSEA

Scope and purpose of Animal Facility
The main objective of the facility is to supply small laboratory animals(rodents) for the regulatory experimental work carried out at NIB.

Outline of the animal facility

The State of Art Animal Facility has distinct clean and dirty corridor for the movement of feed and bedding and waste.Prior to entry into the facility there is a change room for staff and visitors. Good Laboratory Practices are followed in the maintenance and upkeep of animals all through.The animal rooms are maintained at 22-25o C with a relative humidity of 50-55%.The rooms have a diurnally operated lighting mechanism providing 10 hrs of light and 14 Hrs of dark cycle.

 In addition in the area surrounding the facility there is a small garden where lucerne/barseem, carrots, spinach and cabbage are grown for the animals.

 An eco friendly vermicompost area also utilizes the non infectious animal waste comprising of bedding(paddy husk) predominantly and converts it into useful biological manure which is used in the cultivation of vegetables and green for the animals.

A dedicated rabbit run which houses rabbits and provides  them their natural ambiance is in place for breeding purpose exclusively.
 

Quarantine room and Sick Bay:
New animals procured from other sources prior to introduction into the facility are quarantined for which a dedicated Quarantine area is designated.A sick bay for animals not well is also maintained.

Disposal of animal waste
The unused feed, and soiled bedding and carcass of animals is segregated and handed to M/s  Semb Ramkey which is an Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board registered firm for its further disposal.

Animal Facility is taken care of by qualified staff which includes officer in charge of the facility, Veterinary officer, Animal care taker and a team of 4 animal attendants.

Expansion of activities

  • Institute plans to include rat(Wistar Strain) breeding programme.
  • Addition of more species of small animals as required for specific purposes will be included.
